Earliest written evidence shows that this family name first appears in the Lincolnshire and Yorkshire Parish Records followed later by those in Herts/Cambs/Essex and also Somerset. A one name dna study on 12 different individuals indicates that the name is regional and that there is in consequence, no common ancestor. The Lincolnshire and Herts/Cambs/Essex trees have Nordic origins but not the Yorkshire or Somerset ones. Kevin,Phoebe etc are known members of one of the Yorkshire Cattley trees who's earliest known ancestor was Stevan Catlay (parish record spelling) who married Elizabeth Jube in Normanton parish in 1609. As one would expect by being regional, members of this tree show dna matches at Y37 marker level 3 with three other Yorkshire Cattley trees suggesting that a common REGIONAL ancestor to them all lived circa 1400 but no parish records survive to show how they were connected. Regards Tim Cattley, Research Member for Cattley and Catley with The Guild Of One Name Studies.
